CFAHU March 2013 Newsletter
President’s Message
Thank you to our loyal CFAHU agent members, carrier representatives, sponsors and friends for continuing to strengthen and grow our chapter. While I do not have a crystal ball to peer into the future, I feel very optimistic knowing that I am doing everything that I can for my business and my clients by being a member of NAHU, CFAHU and FAHU. The challenges we face as health care insurance agents is not news to anyone but the story that is often NOT told is the dedication, professionalism and concern each one of our member agents has for their business and individual clients.
My membership provides me with the most up to the minute health care reform information, great professional development courses and networking with other agents and industry professionals. It also provides me with a lobbying voice both on the state and federal levels. I know that through NAHU and FAHU my concerns are being heard and that our great lobbyists are helping the politicians to see the enormous value that we bring to our clients.
If you are a health insurance agent or broker doing business in Central Florida and not yet a member of CFAHU, I invite you to attend one of our monthly luncheon meetings as our guest and find out why your membership and alliance with us is so important for YOU as a professional at this time.
I hope to see you at our next membership luncheon.
Regards,
Augie Buffa, President

PEO Source Inc is a Professional Employer Organization (PEO) brokerage that mimic’s the independent insurance agency system. Unlike individual PEO’s whose sole purpose it is to make your clients fit their model, PEO Source finds all the PEO options available to your clients ,secures quotes and compares all the features and costs for your clients in a comprehensive document. They point out the pros and con’s so each client has all the information to make an educated decision as to which PEO is best suited to their unique business and culture. PEO Source carries Errors and Omissions insurance specific to the PEO Sale. PEO Source works with many of the top insurance agencies in Florida, NY and New Jersey including USI, Van Dyke, Bonikowski, NSI, Plastridge, ACC Hall and hundreds of other agents
PEO Source is headed by Howard Forman and Robert Ziegler.
Mr. Forman is a renowned expert on the PEO industry. He has been in the PEO business since 1986. He started as a sales representative with a PEO in Tampa Florida where within a month and a half he was their number one producer. He was relocated by that PEO to Orlando, Florida where he was instrumental in building that PEO into one of the nations largest at that time. In 1993 Mr. Forman was recruited to NYC where he became a Regional Vice President for a publicly traded PEO. In 1996 Mr. Forman was recruited by NovaCare HR to become their Regional VP in Boston Massachusetts. When NovaCare divested themselves of their PEO Mr. Forman went to work for Managed Comp’s new PEO. Managed Comp was a workers compensation insurer in the Greater Boston area. Mr. Forman returned to Florida in 1998 to become one of the four founding partners of Alphastaff, a South Florida based PEO. Mr. Forman has written numerous articles on the PEO Industry for many Regional and National Publications including the Tampa Tribune, Orlando Sentinel, and Accounting Today. Prior to entering the PEO industry Mr. Forman spent 7 years in the US Air Force after attending St. Johns University in NY.
Bob Ziegler has over 30 years of diversified experience in the Insurance Industry. Mr. Ziegler started as a Marketing Representative for Zurich Insurance Company and went on to start and run his own Property and Casualty Insurance Agency. Mr. Ziegler became aware of Professional Employment Organizations while he was with America Comp, a Daytona Workers Compensation only company. America Comp sold Workers Compensation coverage to what were then called Employee Leasing Companies which later became known as PEO’s. Mr. Ziegler joined AlphaStaff, a Florida based PEO, as National Director of Business Development. After five years with AlphStaff, Mr. Ziegler joined and became a partner in PEO Source with the title of Executive Vice President. Along with his partner Howard Forman he pioneered the agent only concept of doing business with PEO’s. Mr. Ziegler attended St. Johns University. He graduated from the Aetna C&S Agents Sales School and received his Certified Insurance Consultants designation in 1979. Capitol Conference 2013
Real People, Real Businesses, Real Solutions was the theme for this year’s Capitol Conference. We were well represented with Laura Staller, Barbara Rennard, Dave Sherrill, Doug Foreman, Angel Hill, Vicki Dickert as well as myself. Below is a quick summary of the issues we discussed:
- It is the cost of health care not the cost of insurance
- H.R. 544 Letting Insurance Benefit Everyone Regardless of Their Youth (LIBERTY) Act
- Issues that are discouraging employer-sponsored coverage should be addressed quickly, they are Confusing and Costly
- New National Premium Tax adding $500 to cost of coverage
- Deductible Caps
- Restricting the rate bands to 3:1
- A 2013 version of the Medical Loss Ratio bill is in the works.
For a complete review of the issues please go to our website to see the leave behind flyer.
More than 850 of your fellow members attended this year’s capitol conference. Of that number 250 were first timers. In spite of the news and the uphill battle we are facing, the meeting was upbeat and many were highly optimistic in that this change was an “Opportunity” for those willing to embrace change and be prepared for it.
