NAHU’s positions are our yardsticks to determine whether or not to support a specific bill; we do not vote on individual pieces of legislation. NAHU’s position papers are first drafted by a NAHU working group under the umbrella of the NAHU’s national legislative council. The working group focuses on the biggest problems facing our industry under their subject areas and tackles the development of position papers on a need-specific basis. As new issues arise, NAHU’s legislative council creates new working groups as necessary.

The working group develops a proposed position through numerous meetings, and they gather input from NAHU members and other stakeholders. After opinions have been sought and a paper drafted, the position is presented to the legislative council. The council can recommend amendments or send it back to the working group to be redrafted before voting. Once the national legislative council agrees on the content of a position statement, it is then forwarded to the NAHU board of trustees for final approval and becomes the policy of the association.
